Firstly, I’m no expert in Discus Fish! Far from it in fact. My Discus Fish seem happy enough or they always come to the front of the tank and watch me but I haven’t done any Discus Fish breeding – and to be honest, several died not long after I bought them, although the rest of my Discus Fish survive and thrive.
I’d always admired other peoples aquariums but I was a little afraid to try it myself not to mention it I thought it would be an expensive hobby! Anyway, about 2 years ago we had a little spare cash so I did a lot of research (and I mean a lot) on fish tanks and tropical fish. Starting from a point of knowing absolutely nothing it wasn’t long before I’d homed in on Discus Fish because they are just gorgeous!
My Discus Fish Tank
Although I live in quite a small town we have the most amazing aquarium shop here so after about 10 indecisive trips and tossing up how much I could afford and which tanks and system to buy I finally bought an AquaOne 980 which holds 215 litres or 57 gallons. What a great choice! Easy to keep clean and look after.
I got it home and set it up and then waited and waited while I did hours and hours more research on the net about discus fish – I’m a bit pedantic and research is my thing, a total waste of probably 200 hours went into my decision haha. And of course the minute I had my tank and bought my Discus Fish a very good friend and owner of 4 magnificent fish tanks said “You’re game to try Discus as your first fish, they are very hard to look after” that wiped the smile off my face!
My Discus Fish
I bought my Discus Fish via a local auction website similar to ebay because I’m cheap! They arrived the next day in a poly box – I was quite amazed they travel this way. In some ways it was a mistake because the Discus I bought were tiny – about the size of my finger nail on my little finger. I bought 10 and 3 promptly died – that was a bit depressing but I figured that I had 7 for the cost of 1 big grown up Discus although I did feel quite guilty that I had doomed 3 fish to travel, be frightened and die. They grew quite quickly and about a year or so later I had some lovely discus and in several different varieties.
